Even the best writers sometimes need professional assistance with revision and editing. I can help you refine your ideas, improve your writing, and make the best impression with agents, publishers, and readers.
Manuscript Critique (picture books only)
I’ll take an objective look at your picture book manuscript to see what’s working well and what needs shoring up. I evaluate character development, story arc, language, and adherence to industry expectations. My feedback is always direct but never unkind, and I provide suggestions for fixing trouble spots.
Because I trained and worked as a journalist before I became an author, I am an expert in fact checking, continuity editing, and making editorial suggestions to improve the clarity and flow of your text. At the same time, because I’m a writer like you, I am careful to honor and preserve your unique writing voice. Copyediting service is available for fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, as well as query letters.
It’s nearly impossible to spot mistakes in your own work, especially in a manuscript you’ve rewritten and reworked dozens of times over a period of months or years. Yet simple mistakes can derail your submissions or — if you’re self-publishing — damage your credibility. I’ll correct typos, find grammatical errors, and ensure that your writing adheres to professional style rules. Proofreading service is available for fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, as well as query letters. Note: Proofreading is the final step before submission or publication. You should hire a proofreader only after your document has been fully edited.
What my clients say . . .
Dori caught typos I’d missed, found inconsistencies in style,
and fixed things I didn’t even know to look for. Her attention to
detail is astounding and just what I wanted in a proofreader.
She’s worth her weight in gold.
– Janice Hardy, author of Planning Your Novel: Ideas and Structure
I hope you realize that every time you send edits to the newsletter
you are teaching me! Sure you catch things that I just didn’t see,
but you also see those things that did not register as errors to me. . . .
Many of your suggestions spur me on to look up the “rule”
and learn the correct way to write it!
– Heather Montgomery, publisher, Southern Breeze News
I thank you for all you have done to get these drafts ready for layout.
You have done an amazing job with very rough copy.
– Beth Day, communications director, Southern Regional Education Board
As a non-profit, we often rely on volunteers for editing
and proofreading. We were amazed that even after our best
volunteers had reviewed our newsletter, Dori found corrections
and made changes and suggestions that no one else had noticed.
She always met our deadlines and is very professional to work with.
– Karen Paz, The Amit Program
